Add Curb Appeal with this Budget Friendly Porch Makeover!

Hello Friends,

If you are anything like us, we are constantly trying to find ways to add curb appeal to our homes. Well by fixing your front porch up and adding a little pop of color really seems to do the trick! Follow these easy steps and let us know what you think!

When the weather starts getting warmer and the days get longer, our attention turns toward the outdoors and spending time outside. That means prepping your backyard or patio (obviously), but don’t forget your front porch, either!
If you don’t want to blow a bunch of cash on the front porch, try a few of these simple and affordable decorating ideas.

Colorful Rugs
Make your front porch a bit cozier by getting an outdoor rug. Green will compliment the foliage around your porch, oranges and yellows will brighten the space, while blues will soothe. For an affordable options, check out IKEA’s selections. Look for the material details and consider getting one that is mold resistant.

Welcome Mat
Make a fun first impression by personalizing a doormat to welcome guests into your home. Grab a plain woven doormat from the nearest home improvement store. Use stencils to paint whatever design or expression you’d like. For step-by-step instructions, check out this postby The Sits Girls.

House Numbers
Make a rustic wooden display of your home’s address numbers with some wood boards and stain. Just make sure the house numbers are large enough to see from the street. This is especially important for emergency responders to easily identify your home.

Hanging Plants
If you have a smaller porch or not much green space, try adding a few hanging baskets. These are easy and low maintenance. To cut down on costs, look for hanging baskets at farmers’ markets instead of greenhouses – they tend to be a bit cheaper if they’re coming directly from farms.

Porch Chairs
Now that the weather is warmer, it’s garage sale season! That means you can likely find a beautiful pair of porch chairs (bonus points if they are old-fashioned rockers). Clean them up by sanding them down, then give ‘em a fresh coat of spray paint.

Welcome Signs
Create your very own welcome sign with a little bit of chalkboard paint and a wood trivet. Drill a hole through the trivet and hang it on your front door with a bit of craft twine.

Front Door Flowers
Try something different than a typical flower wreath! Hang a lightweight decorative pot or flower bucket with a bit of thick ribbon. This bucket-wreath from Etsy is upwards of $100, but you can certainly make your own!

Slow Cooker Black Bean and Corn Salsa Chicken

Hello Friends,

Hope everyone had an amazing Fourth of July weekend! If you are like us the last thing you want to do is go home and cook over a hot stove after a long hard days work. So here is an easy dinner idea that can be prepared and even frozen ahead of time. So all you have to do is pull it out of the freezer and throw it in the slow cooker and go to work. When you come home dinner is practically already done! Check out these easy steps!

Slow Cooker Black Bean and Corn Salsa Chicken
Author: Six Sisters' Stuff (via Jamie)
Recipe type: Freezer Meal
Prep time:  5 mins
Cook time:  4 hours
Total time:  4 hours 5 mins
Serves: 4

This is one of the easiest freezer meals to assemble - just dump all the ingredients in a resealable bag and place in the freezer. When you are ready to eat it, dump it in the slow cooker and dinner is done!
Ingredients
·         1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
·         1 (14 oz) can corn, drained
·         ½ package taco seasoning (about 1 tablespoon)
·         ½ cup salsa
·         ⅓ cup water
·         1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts

Optional garnish toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, avocado (diced), lettuce (shredded), tomatoes (diced), hot sauce
Instructions
1.    If making a freezer meals, label a gallon-sized resealable freezer bag with the title of the recipe and how to long to cook in the slow cooker.
2.    Dump the black beans, corn, salsa, taco seasoning, and water in the resealable bag and mix until all the ingredients are combined. Add the chicken breasts and zip the bag closed. Place in the freezer until ready to use.
3.    When ready to cook, remove bag from freezer and place in fridge overnight so that it can thaw. Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and dump bag ingredients into the slow cooker. Cook on high for 4-5 hours or on low for 6-7 hours (until chicken is completely done).
4.    Shred meat and serve however you want (in tacos, burritos, nachos, salads, etc). Garnish with cheese, sour cream, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and hot sauce.
5.    Put beans, corn, taco seasoning, and water in crock pot and mix together until seasoning is dissolved. Place chicken breasts on top and spread salsa on chicken. Cook on high for 4 hours. Shred meat and serve however you want (see explanation above). Garnish with cheese, sour cream, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and hot sauce.
Notes

You can also skip the freezing step of this recipe and dump all ingredients directly into your slow cooker, then cook on high for 4-5 hours (or low for 6-7 hours).
You can cook this recipe ahead of time, wait for it to cool, and then put it in the freezer for a quick and healthy dinner!
Share your easy dinner recipes with us, we would love to hear your ideas!

House Plants that actually improve the air quality in your Home! Check these out!

Hello Friends,

Adding a houseplant or two always seems to improve the look of a room. But as it turns out, certain houseplants can also improve your health. According to recent studies by NASA, some houseplants filter out dangerous compounds that are commonly found in most homes – the kind of compounds that are often associated with respiratory illnesses, cancer, and other conditions.
Because they are enclosed spaces, our homes are vulnerable to gaseous toxins that build up over time. These include:
·         Benzene – caused by paints, detergents, and furniture wax,
·         Formaldehyde – caused by disinfectants or preservatives in consumer products
·         Toluene and Xylene – caused by a variety of household and consumer products
·         Ammonia – caused by commonly used aerosols and sprays
But 10 NASA-approved houseplants are says to be effective in removing air pollutants:
·         English Ivy – a trailing ivy plant that requires partial shade and light weekly watering
·         Florist’s chrysanthemum – A lovely floral that needs direct light and frequent change of water
·         Peace Lily – Produces small, white flowers. Needs weekly watering. But consider carefully before buying, because this plant can be poisonous to house pets
·         Variegated Snake Plant – Has tall, broad, green and white leaves. Requires partial shade and weekly watering
·         Red-edged Dracaena – Almost cactus-like in appearance, this plant needs direct sunlight and weekly watering
·         Cornstalk Dracaena – Produces cornstalk-type leaves. Wants partial shade and weekly watering
·         Broadleaf Lady Palm – Fern-like plant that likes partial shade and weekly watering
·         Flamingo Lily – Also known as anthurium, this plant produces shiny red flowers and requires partial shade and weekly watering
·         Devil’s Ivy – produces luxurious ivy leaves, likes partial shade, and needs only monthly watering
·         Lilyturf – Produces purple flowers. Requires partial shade and weekly watering.
*Take note: Water lightly in most cases, as over-watering can cause root rot and kill the plant.
Which House plants are your favorite? Let us know!

Hill Air Force Base Air Show June 25 & 26! You can't miss this!

Hello Friends,

It's that time of the year again, a local favorite - The Hill AFB Air Show! You won't want to miss this. Plan to arrive early to avoid long lines, and don't forget the sunblock as shade is limited.Check out Hill Air Force Base's Air Show on June 25 & 26 starting at 8 AM!

HILL AIR FORCE BASE — Hill Air Force Base’s biannual air show is set to return in 2016.
Base officials announced Wednesday, Dec. 9 the open house and air show, titled “Warriors Over the Wasatch,” will take place June 25-26.
Hill spokesman Micah Garbarino said the two-day show is open to the public and will feature the Air Force’s aerial F-16 demonstration squadron, the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team and several other aerial demonstrations. No special security clearances are needed to attend the show.
“We're excited to host the Thunderbirds and Golden Knights in 2016,” said Col. Ron Jolly, 75th Air Base Wing and Installation commander, in a prepared statement. “These events are important for our service's recruiting efforts and give us the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of our military.”
Hill’s last air show took place in 2014 and had an operating budget of about $500,000. The show is typically paid mainly through private donations, but Hill also uses funds from its Operations and Maintenance Budget. For the 2014 show, Utah lawmakers voted to give the show $100,000 in one-time state funds.
More than 500,000 spectators attended the 2014 show.
As the show date nears, the base’s public affairs office will provide updates on additional performers and attendance procedures at www.hill.af.mil/warriorsoverthewasatch/.
We hope to see you all there!
